Central Córdoba will experience the most significant match in their history as they take on Flamengo at the legendary Maracanã Stadium on Wednesday in Group C of the Copa Libertadores. The Argentine side is competing in South America's top club competition for the first time after winning the Copa Argentina last season, according to Infobae.
Their tournament debut ended in a goalless draw at home against Ecuador's LDU Quito, and now they face the daunting task of challenging Flamengo, three-time Libertadores champions and one of the favorites to lift the trophy again this year. The Brazilian powerhouse opened the group with a 1-0 win over Deportivo Táchira, with Juninho scoring the decisive goal.
Head coach Omar De Felippe, a veteran of the Falklands War, rested his key players in domestic action to ensure they are fresh for this massive occasion. “It’s always eleven against eleven. If they play like they did against Táchira, we’ll bring something back,” De Felippe stated confidently.
The disparity in resources is stark. Central Córdoba's entire squad is valued at around €16 million—less than Flamengo’s Uruguayan star Nicolás de la Cruz alone, according to Transfermarkt. Yet the underdogs remain determined to defy the odds.
Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. local time in Rio de Janeiro. In the same group, LDU Quito will host Deportivo Táchira as the group standings begin to take shape.
