Peruvian football is mourning the death of Helar Gonzales Altamirano, a 21-year-old player who passed away after sustaining a serious head injury during a Copa Perú 2025 match. According to RPP, the young forward for Club Real Titan NC collided violently with the opposing goalkeeper in the 70th minute of a game against Defensor Nueva Cajamarca and lost consciousness immediately. He was rushed to a hospital in Moyobamba but died two days later due to complications from the trauma.
The incident occurred as Gonzales was attacking in hopes of scoring. Both players jumped to contest the ball, resulting in a forceful mid-air clash. The impact left Gonzales unconscious on the ground, prompting a swift response from teammates and medical staff. His brother, Eliceo Gonzales Altamirano, later confirmed that doctors attributed the cause of death to a ruptured artery in his head.
The community of Palestina, where the player lived with his family, held his wake in an atmosphere of deep sorrow. His father, José Miguel Gonzales, told EBO Noticias that his son had long dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. “Since he was a child, he said he wanted to go far. The team will continue playing in his memory,” he said.
The Peruvian Football Federation also expressed condolences: “The FPF mourns the passing of Helar Gonzales Altamirano. Our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and Club Real Titan.”
Teammates and neighbors have launched a fundraising campaign to support the family with funeral costs. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for greater safety measures in regional football competitions throughout Peru.
