Tiago Nunes Steps Down as Universidad Católica Coach After Fourth Straight Loss

Tiago Nunes has resigned as head coach of Universidad Católica following a 3–1 defeat to Deportes La Serena, as reported by 24horas.cl. The loss, part of a four-match losing streak, proved to be the final straw in a tenure marked by inconsistency and mounting pressure from fans.
Flanked by club vice president Felipe Correa and sporting director José María Buljubasich at Santa Laura Stadium, Nunes confirmed his departure just minutes after being targeted by chants from the UC supporters. “I entered through the front door of this great club, and I leave the same way. I tried to do an excellent job,” he stated.
Correa and Buljubasich praised Nunes for his professionalism and character, noting his internal contributions to the club, but admitted that poor results made his position untenable.
Appointed in 2024 after Nicolás Núñez’s departure, Nunes initially showed promise. However, in 2025, the team crashed out of both the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Chile, and now finds itself on a four-match losing streak—three in the league and one in cup play.
Nunes leaves with a record of 19 wins, 9 draws, and 18 losses over 46 matches, posting a 47.8% win rate. Universidad Católica now begins its search for a new head coach in a season clouded by setbacks.
