Romania's national team has a new head coach. Mircea Lucescu, the 79-year-old football legend, has been appointed as the new manager.

The Romanian Football Federation officially introduced Lucescu as the new head coach. The agreement with Lucescu is set until 2026, with the primary objective of leading Romania to the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Lucescu replaces Edward Iordanescu, who left the role immediately after Euro 2024.

"It is time to move to a new stage. In this new phase, we want to return to the World Cup. The Romanian Football Federation believes that having a coach with extensive experience is crucial.

Mircea Lucescu is that person, and with him at the helm, I believe we can write a new chapter in Romanian football history," said Federation President Răzvan Burleanu.

Previously, Lucescu managed the Romanian national team from 1981 to 1986. At the club level, he enjoyed significant success with Shakhtar Donetsk, winning the UEFA Cup in 2008/09.

Lucescu has also managed Dynamo Kyiv, Galatasaray, the Turkish national team, Beşiktaş, Inter Milan, Brescia, Pisa, Dynamo Bucharest, and Rapid Bucharest.
