Belgium forward Jérémy Doku has found himself at the center of a major controversy during the 2026 World Cup. The footballer may temporarily leave the national team camp to be present for the birth of his first child.
The wife of the Manchester City winger is expected to give birth in early July, coinciding with the World Cup quarter-finals. “This is my first child, and I definitely want to be there,” the player explained.
However, Doku's decision has sparked mixed reactions. Some fans and pundits have supported the Belgian, viewing his choice as completely natural, while others have lashed out at him, insisting that players should remain fully focused on the tournament during the World Cup. The comments of French journalist France Pierron on L'Équipe caused particular controversy.
“You have the chance to play at a World Cup, a dream for hundreds of footballers, and you’re giving it up to be present at the birth of your child. With all due respect, I find that appalling, because the father doesn’t play any real role in that moment—only a secondary one,” Pierron said.
Her statement ignited a storm of debate on social media. Many users sided with Doku, noting that being present for the birth of your first child is one of the most important moments in life and should not be a reason for criticism.
It should be noted that Doku will also miss Belgium’s second group stage match against Iran due to a respiratory infection.
