River Plate will play their first home match of the 2025 Copa Libertadores without fans in the stands due to a disciplinary sanction by CONMEBOL. The decision stems from excessive pyrotechnic use during the semifinal second leg against Atlético Mineiro in 2024.
The punishment includes a $100,000 fine and a one-match stadium ban. The match against Ecuador's Barcelona SC at the Estadio Monumental will be held behind closed doors, with only club officials, accredited journalists, and essential personnel allowed entry under CONMEBOL regulations.
The ban applies to one game only, meaning River’s fans can return for the next home fixture against Independiente del Valle on May 15.
In addition to the closed-door sanction, River was fined a further $45,000 for various administrative breaches during last year’s tournament, including violations of the Club Manual. The club also received a formal warning, with the risk of more severe penalties for future infractions.
A separate $50,000 fine was issued over a racist incident involving supporters during the same semifinal. River must now take specific steps against racism, including stadium displays and a social media campaign with the phrase “Basta de Racismo” before their next home game.
