Details: According to L'Equipe, it was reported today that 50-year-old Swiss snowboarder and Olympic bronze medalist Ueli Kestenholz died after being caught in an avalanche in the canton of Valais, Switzerland.
Official authorities in Valais stated that at an altitude of 2,400 meters, an avalanche was triggered for unexplained reasons, proving fatal for Kestenholz, who was at the scene. The former athlete was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Ueli Kestenholz claimed the Olympic bronze medal in 1998 at the Nagano Games in Japan. He also earned five medals in the Snowboard World Cup throughout his career.
The snowboarding world mourns the loss of an icon.
