Ricardo Gareca is once again at the center of conversation in Peruvian football following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. According to journalist Pedro García on Vamos al Var, FPF president Agustín Lozano is reportedly pushing for the Argentine coach’s return in an effort to regain political footing ahead of December’s federation elections.
The timing appears opportune: Peru was eliminated after a goalless draw with Ecuador, and Gareca recently stepped down as Chile’s manager following a loss to Bolivia. García claimed the 66-year-old had been open to returning after Juan Reynoso’s departure, but the federation never reached out. Now, with the team adrift and public confidence waning, Lozano may see Gareca’s return as a symbolic lifeline to rally support and restore credibility.
During his first tenure, Gareca led Peru to their first World Cup in 36 years and a Copa América final, forging a strong connection with players and fans. “I have no doubt that Gareca’s return is very likely,” García said, adding that the coach felt his exit from Chile was premature and remains open to rejoining the Peruvian setup.
For now, Óscar Ibáñez remains interim manager. His recent results—a draw against Uruguay and a win over Paraguay—have sparked cautious optimism. However, his future will depend on further review. If he fails to convince, Gareca’s return could shift from possibility to political necessity.
