In the second leg of the UEFA Champions League, Qarabag FK travelled away to Newcastle United, where they etched their name into the tournament’s history — but for all the wrong reasons.
Details: Qarabag conceded twice early on, taking their total to 29 goals allowed in this season’s competition. According to Opta Analyst, that is the highest number of goals conceded by any team in a single Champions League campaign. The previous record belonged to Bayer Leverkusen, who shipped 28 goals in the 2001/02 season.
In the previous match, the Magpies struck five times in the first half to surge into a commanding 5–0 lead. Newcastle became only the second team in history to hold a five-goal advantage before the break in a Champions League knockout match.
Reminder: On Wednesday, 25 February, Real Madrid will host Benfica in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie. However, they will be without their star forward.
