Orlando Pirates reopen negotiations with Rulani Mokwena

Orlando Pirates have reportedly initiated discussions with Rulani Mokwena regarding the vacant head coach position following Jose Riveiro's departure, according to sources close to the negotiations. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad AC tactician, who recently parted ways with the Moroccan club after securing a third-place finish with three matches remaining in the season, is said to be open to a Pirates reunion as he revealed in a recent Soccer Africa interview.
However, the Buccaneers face competition from CAF Champions League holders Pyramids FC, who have also expressed interest in securing Mokwena's services. The 38-year-old coach, who previously served as part of Pirates' technical team in 2019, boasts an impressive resume including four domestic league titles and an African Football League triumph during his tenure at Sundowns.
Should an agreement be reached, Mokwena is expected to assemble his own technical staff as Pirates aim to expedite the process to ensure sufficient preparation time for their upcoming pre-season tour in Spain. The potential return of the highly-regarded tactician could evoke nostalgia among the Pirates faithful, reminiscent of his previous stint with the Soweto giants.
