The Fiorentina player was the target of an illegal smear campaign and was falsely accused of acts he did not commit.
Details: According to Football Italia, 28-year-old Icelandic striker Albert Gudmundsson of Fiorentina has been declared completely innocent of sexual assault charges.
Reports indicate that the Icelandic court sided with the player, as the woman who accused Gudmundsson of the crime and demanded 3 million Icelandic kroner was inconsistent in her testimony and lacked sufficient evidence.
Last October, Gudmundsson had already won a separate court case, but the opposing party refused to back down and filed an appeal. This time, however, the court definitively closed the case, putting a firm end to the matter.
"I am glad that the Supreme Court upheld the decision previously made by the District Court — and let's not forget, the district prosecutor also dropped the case at the time. I consider this a convincing 3-0 victory in my work," Albert wrote on his Instagram page.
Gudmundsson joined Fiorentina last summer from Genoa for €13 million, though he had previously played for the "Viola" on loan. He has made 49 appearances for Fiorentina, scoring 12 goals and providing 5 assists.
Reminder: Problems for Italian teams. Six Serie A clubs face threat of transfer ban as early as January
