“We were robbed.” Xabi Alonso hits out at referees after draw with Hull
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso was extremely unhappy with the refereeing after his side's Premier League fourth-round match against Hull City. The London side drew 2-2 at home, although the Spanish coach believes they should have taken all three points.
After the final whistle, Alonso spoke at length with the referee. At his press conference, the coach explained that he wanted to understand the official's decision in a controversial incident involving Morgan Rogers, when Chelsea could have been awarded a penalty.
“For me, it was a clear foul in the box. The referee saw the incident, VAR reviewed it, but somehow play continued. If the penalty had been given, we probably would have won the match,” Alonso said.
The coach was particularly angered by a late incident involving Estevão. According to Alonso, the player's arm was well away from his body, while the player himself had not deliberately tried to direct the ball onto it.
“It's interesting why that wasn't given. His arm was not close to his body. I think we were robbed in this match. If someone explains to me a valid reason why the penalty wasn't given, then fine. But for now, we were robbed,” Alonso said.
