“Will always be a part of me.” Athletic star Williams retires from international football
Athletic captain Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football with Ghana. The 32-year-old forward spent four years with the Black Stars, making 28 appearances and scoring two goals.
Williams' final appearance for the national team came in a World Cup match against Colombia in July. Ghana lost 1-0 and were eliminated from the tournament in the round of 32. However, the team reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2010.
“I feel that the time has come to end my journey with the Ghana national team. I leave happy, proud and at peace, knowing that every time I put on this shirt, I gave it everything I had,” Williams wrote.
The footballer admitted that Ghana had given him much more than football, allowing him to feel a connection to his roots and pride in representing the country. “Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue to support the Black Star as one of you, wherever I may be,” the forward added.
Williams was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents. Before switching to the Ghana national team, he made one appearance for Spain in a friendly. In 2022, the footballer officially began representing the Black Stars.
