Benni McCarthy, the head coach of the Harambee Stars, has stated unequivocally that players will only be selected for his team based on their on-field performance. The former Manchester United boss openly criticized the notion of selection based on reputation or favoritism in an interview with NTV.
“If I see flames from a player, whether they’ve played before or not, they’ll play for me,” McCarthy said. “You’ve got to show me what you can do on the training pitch.”
"Flames" Players Wanted
The South African legend—tasked with leading Kenya through the 2024 CHAN and co-hosted 2027 AFCON—said he’s drawn to players who are fearless, adaptable, and understand the team’s pressing style.
“They’re not intimidated by names like Olunga or Odada,” he explained. “They believe in their ability and want to shine.”
Early Signs of Promise
Since his appointment in March, McCarthy has overseen two World Cup qualifiers, including a thrilling 3-3 draw with Gambia and a narrow 2-1 loss to Gabon. His squad featured a mix of local talent like Mohammed Bajaber and Europe-based stars such as captain Michael Olunga—both of whom scored against Gambia.
Kenyan Mentality Praised
McCarthy also praised Kenyan players’ ambition compared to their South African counterparts. “In Kenya, players believe they can succeed in Europe,” he told Pulse Sports. “They’re not afraid to step out of their comfort zone—and I love that.”
