Harambee Stars midfielder William Lenkupae has revealed that a conversation with new Kenya coach Benni McCarthy convinced him to commit his international future to Kenya, despite being eligible to play for another country.
Choosing Kenya Over Australia
Lenkupae, born and raised in Australia, qualified to represent Kenya through his parentage. Despite never playing for Australia at youth level, he was eligible for a call-up. However, after speaking with McCarthy, the Central Coast Mariners midfielder felt Kenya was the right choice.
"I spoke to the coach, and he put a good idea in my head. I thought this is perfect for me. I've always been in touch with this place," Lenkupae said.
A Dream Debut
The 23-year-old made an instant impact on his debut against Gambia, coming on as a second-half substitute and scoring a dramatic last-minute equalizer to secure a 3-3 draw.
"It was an amazing achievement for myself. A dream come true. My family in Australia and my family here were all happy. It’s a moment I will always cherish," he said.
Looking Ahead to Gabon Clash
Kenya will face Gabon on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium in McCarthy’s first home game. Lenkupae hopes to play a key role, whether as a starter or substitute, and insists he is honored to represent Kenya.
"My father’s here, my uncle’s here, and I’ve always had that connection. I knew this was going to be a great team, and I’m grateful to be part of it."
