Is the referee a Barcelona fan? Real Madrid uncover video featuring a surprising confession
Real Madrid TV has unearthed a surprising interview with referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández from its archives, recorded back in 1994. At the time, the future official was just 12 years old.
The old footage attracted particular attention following the Real Madrid — Real Betis match held last night. Hernández Hernández was the referee for that game, and the club’s television channel has now brought to light an interview with him from his childhood.
The presenter asked the young Hernández Hernández a simple question: which club did he support? The boy’s answer was unequivocal: “Barcelona, of course.”
More than three decades later, that remark has taken on an unexpected new dimension. Hernández Hernández grew up to become a professional referee and, years later, went on to officiate matches involving Real Madrid, including their recent encounter with Betis.
Real Madrid TV chose to remind fans of the episode now, bringing archive footage that is more than 30 years old back into the spotlight. The childhood confession, of course, does not in itself prove any bias on the referee’s part, but following the match it is likely to spark plenty of discussion among Real Madrid supporters.
