José Mourinho did not hold back after Real Madrid's first defeat of the season.
Details: Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Real Betis in the fourth round of LaLiga. Troy Parrott scored the only goal in the 81st minute, while Kylian Mbappé had a late opportunity to rescue a point from the penalty spot, but Álvaro Valles saved his effort. After the final whistle, Mourinho insisted that the result did not reflect what he had seen on the pitch.
“Sometimes you lose, and you can’t explain why. I genuinely don't know why we lost. We played so well. Very well. The players' attitude was fantastic, and we did everything to win,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese then congratulated the opposition in his own unmistakable style:
“Congrats to Betis. They won the lottery tonight.”
Mourinho continued: “The game was ALL Real Madrid. We created so many chances. If we drew tonight, we would have been disappointed.”
The Real Madrid coach was also asked about his yellow card and immediately turned the conversation toward Betis' behaviour:
“My yellow card… it was because I jumped, as a Betis player was pretending to be dead. Betis players got zero yellows in the 1st half, and poor Arda, who only plays football, was booked... I don't know!”
Mourinho had more complaints about the way individual episodes were judged:
“There was a clear yellow card on Valverde. Step on foot. Always a yellow card… but Fede stays on his feet, he doesn't even fall. Meanwhile Betis players exaggerated every foul so much, that you'd think they need an ambulance from their reactions!”
It is worth noting that the defeat ended Real Madrid's perfect start to the 2026/27 LaLiga campaign. Mourinho's side had won their opening three league matches and scored 10 goals while conceding only two; after the loss in Seville, their record stands at three wins and one defeat with a 10-3 goal difference.
