Kenya’s head coach, Benni McCarthy, remains hopeful about the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia on Thursday night. The result keeps Harambee Stars fourth in Group F with six points after five matches.
Fighting Spirit on Display
Kenya remained resilient even though they were behind 2-0 early in the second half. Mohamed Bajaber, a replacement, equalized in the 75th minute after captain Michael Olunga scored a penalty in the 67th. Musa Barrow's second goal gave Gambia the lead again, but William Wilson's goal deep into stoppage time gave Kenya a vital point back.
McCarthy, who was managing his first match for Kenya after being appointed earlier this month, acknowledged the team’s fighting spirit. “The draw doesn’t help either team, but I will take it considering we had only one training session before the match,” he said. “The players showed great character, and this gives me hope moving forward.”
Looking Ahead to Gabon Clash
With 15 points still available in the qualifiers, McCarthy insists Kenya must fight for every point. Their next challenge is against second-placed Gabon, a must-win match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
“I know we have a tough game ahead, but we must believe in ourselves,” McCarthy stated. “We have the talent, but now it’s about execution. The players must recover and be ready to give their best.”
