Leonel Álvarez is preparing to take legal action against Emelec, the Ecuadorian club he briefly managed in 2024, in a case that could have significant financial consequences. According to Bolavip, the Colombian coach will file a formal complaint with FIFA over unpaid wages and contractual breaches following his premature dismissal.
Despite having a contract valid until the end of 2026, Álvarez was removed from his role after only six months, during which he led the team through a disappointing campaign with just four wins in 17 matches.
Emelec initially offered a settlement of $100,000 to resolve the dispute, but the deal was never finalized due to the club’s lack of a recognized board. Without an official directive, the proposed agreement could not be signed. Now, Álvarez is expected to demand full compensation, including the $600,000 release clause he had originally waived.
The case adds to the mounting legal troubles facing Emelec, which is already entangled in multiple disputes with former coaches and remains in administrative limbo pending recognition from Ecuador’s Ministry of Sport.
