After América de Cali’s 1-1 draw with Racing Montevideo secured their place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, Juan Fernando Quintero made headlines with comments that cast doubt on his future at the Colombian club. Speaking post-match, the midfielder told TyC Sports, “Once the semester ends, I’ll take a look and see what comes next,” prompting speculation about a potential departure.
Pressed on rumors linking him back to River Plate — now preparing for the Club World Cup — Quintero gave a knowing response: “Let me finish this game. But everyone knows I’m always linked to River during transfer windows.” That brief but telling line was enough to stir excitement among River fans, who still revere the Colombian for his iconic role in the club’s 2018 Copa Libertadores triumph.
Quintero had left Racing after winning the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, returning to Colombia largely for personal reasons. In a previous interview with ESPN, he revealed a gentleman’s agreement with Racing not to join River or another Argentine club immediately. However, he noted the pact didn’t specify a timeframe.
Despite downplaying immediate intentions, his emotional ties to River remain strong. “They don’t need me now — they have a great team — but as a fan, I really enjoy watching them,” he said. With River heading into a pivotal international tournament and manager Marcelo Gallardo seeking reinforcements, Quintero’s name is once again in the orbit. Whether this emotional connection evolves into a third spell in Núñez remains to be seen.
