Is Rulani Mokwena close to Orlando Pirates?

Orlando Pirates appear poised for a major coaching shakeup, with multiple sources indicating Rulani Mokwena is finalizing a dramatic return to the Soweto giants. The 37-year-old tactician, who previously served as Pirates' interim coach in 2019, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to take over the vacant position left by José Riveiro's departure to Al Ahly in April.
Insiders reveal the deal is nearing completion, though certain contractual details remain unresolved. A key sticking point involves Mokwena's insistence on assembling his own technical staff - a condition he maintained during previous tenures at Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad AC.
Should the move materialize, the Buccaneers' technical bench could see a significant reshuffle. Mokwena has allegedly approached Michael Loftman for an assistant coaching role, while current deputy Mandla Ncikazi is expected to retain his position.
The potential appointment marks a homecoming for the young coach, whose family boasts deep ties to the club. As the son of Julius Sono Hloae and nephew of Pirates legend Jomo Sono, Mokwena's return would carry significant symbolic weight for the Sea Robbers' faithful.
This development comes amid a flurry of transfer activity at Pirates, including reported interest in several high-profile players and the potential departure of rising star Relebohile Mofokeng. The technical team overhaul signals the club's ambition to reclaim domestic supremacy after finishing outside the top two last season.
