“I’m proud,” says Yoane Wissa following the DR Congo’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup
Despite the pain felt following the Leopards’ exit in the round of 32, the Congolese striker is not disappointed with his team’s run.
Yoane Wissa and the DR Congo made history at the 2026 World Cup by reaching the knockout stages. But the Congolese team’s run came to an end in the round of 32. Despite this elimination, Yoane Wissa, who had an exceptional tournament, is focusing on the impression left by the Leopards throughout the competition.
“I’m not disappointed today, because the impression we left was perfect. I’m proud of this bunch of mates; I’m proud of this squad that the manager selected and moulded in his own image! The Congo is now on the map of international football.
My greatest honour is not having scored the DRC’s first ever World Cup goal, nor having scored three goals, but having made our national anthem ring out across the world, in living rooms where people didn’t even know where our magnificent country was.”
