In recent years, Wrexham has become one of the most talked-about clubs in England, despite playing in League One (the third tier of English football). The credit goes to Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who own the club.
Details: According to Wales Online, during their five years of ownership, Reynolds and McElhenney have increased Wrexham’s revenue fourfold. But how did they achieve this?
In 2019, Wrexham's revenue was £2.5 million. Now, it stands at £10.5 million, primarily due to the club’s rise from the fifth tier to the third tier in just two seasons.
Reports indicate that even in the National League (fifth tier), the Hollywood duo paid players wages of around £3,000 per week, allowing them to attract talent from higher leagues.
The club’s global recognition skyrocketed with the release of the Disney+ documentary series. Matchday attendance now averages 13,000 fans, significantly boosting ticket revenue.
Additionally, Wrexham has sold around £10 million worth of merchandise, including shirts, over recent years.
Reynolds and McElhenney reportedly spent about £20 million to acquire the club. If they were to sell Wrexham now, they would likely turn a profit.
However, the Hollywood stars have not yet fully recouped their investment. They continue to reinvest in the club, including plans for stadium renovations.
Reminder: Reynolds and McElhenney’s ultimate goal is to bring Wrexham to the Premier League.
After 25 rounds, Wrexham sits third in League One, just two points behind leaders Birmingham City.
