Lionel Messi has become only the third player in history to score in six consecutive World Cup matches.

Details: In the group stage match of the 2026 World Cup against Austria, Argentina triumphed 2-0, with the 38-year-old Messi netting a brace.

Before Messi, only two players had ever achieved such a streak at the World Cup. Just Fontaine scored in six straight matches for France in 1958, while Jairzinho matched the feat for Brazil in 1970.

The brace against Austria also propelled Messi to become the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history. The Argentine surpassed Miroslav Klose in total World Cup goals.

With this victory, Argentina now has 6 points in Group J and has secured a spot in the knockout stage. In the final round, Lionel Scaloni’s team will face Jordan on June 28.

Recall: Earlier, Messi scored a hat-trick in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Algeria, with Argentina winning 3-0.
