There was a prevailing belief among the public that European clubs would not take the Club World Cup seriously. Yet, for some managers, the tournament's aftermath proved costly—costly enough to lose their jobs.
Details: Porto's press service announced the start of negotiations to terminate the contract with their head coach, Martin Anselmi. The Dragons issued a terse, one-line statement, noting that the contract termination should be amicable, without offering any further details.
Background: Anselmi took charge of Porto at the end of January this year. He first suffered elimination in the Europa League play-off round at the hands of Roma, then finished third in the Portuguese league, and repeated that position in their Club World Cup group—missing out on the play-offs behind Palmeiras and Inter Miami.
According to the latest reports, the Dragons have already chosen a replacement for the 39-year-old Argentine coach, and former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli is set to take over.
