From Stoke City to Zamalek: Tony Pulis Begins New Chapter in Egypt

Egyptian giants Zamalek SC are preparing to welcome Tony Pulis as their new sporting director, marking a bold and unexpected move as the club looks to overhaul its football structure.
Arrival and Immediate Duties
The 67-year-old former Premier League manager is expected to arrive in Cairo on Monday alongside his assistant. He will begin his duties on Tuesday, starting with a meeting with the youth sector, before watching Zamalek’s high-stakes clash against Pyramids FC from the stands at Cairo International Stadium.
Concerns Over Suitability
The announcement, which was initially made public by former club president Mamdouh Abbas, has generated discussion among supporters and commentators, with many doubting Pulis' suitability for the position:
- No administrative background: Pulis has never held a non-coaching role or worked as a sporting director.
- No career trophies: Despite a long managerial career, he’s yet to lift a major title.
- Four-year absence: There were questions regarding his preparedness because his most recent position was with Sheffield Wednesday in 2020.
Zamalek Board Sees Value in Discipline
Despite doubts, the Zamalek board views Pulis’ discipline, structure, and English football expertise as valuable assets in restructuring the club. His responsibilities will include:
- Selecting a new first-team coach
- Improving football operations and youth development
- Reshaping the club's identity on and off the pitch
Pulis, who famously led Stoke City to an FA Cup final and won the 2014 Premier League Manager of the Year, now faces a unique challenge in North Africa.
