From Pirates to Cairo: Riveiro Poised to Become Africa’s Best-Paid Coach

Former Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro is reportedly on the verge of joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly, a move that would make him the highest-paid head coach on the African continent.
Early Exit from Pirates
The Orlando Pirates confirmed on Monday that they had granted Riveiro an early release from his contract, allowing the Spaniard to pursue a new opportunity.
"Jose approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club," said club chairman Irvin Khoza.
Destination: North Africa
Multiple reports suggest that Riveiro is heading to Cairo to finalize terms with Al Ahly, who have been actively seeking a new manager following the departure of Marcel Koller. With the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup approaching in June, the Red Devils are eager to secure leadership quickly.
Riveiro's Record with Pirates
Despite losing his final game — the Nedbank Cup final to Kaizer Chiefs (2-1) — Riveiro leaves with an impressive legacy:
- 3 MTN8 titles
- 2 Nedbank Cups
- Regular Betway Premiership title contention
His tactical approach and charisma earned him deep admiration from fans, many of whom were saddened by his earlier announcement that he would leave at season’s end.
Mega Deal with Al Ahly
According to sources close to the negotiations:
- Riveiro’s starting salary is reportedly around $100,000/month (R1.8 million)
- That figure could rise to $150,000/month (R2.7 million) with performance bonuses
- If confirmed, he would eclipse Pitso Mosimane’s $120,000/month deal from 2020
What’s Next for Pirates?
While Mamelodi Sundowns are set to clinch their eighth straight title with a win over Chippa United, Pirates will close their campaign without Riveiro. The club has already been linked with former Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena, adding more intrigue to their rebuild.
Al Ahly’s Coaching Hunt
Al Ahly were also linked with Francisco Garcia (ex-Sevilla), but his European prospects — notably with Watford — seem to have opened the door wider for Riveiro.
