Legendary French defender and 1998 World Cup champion Bixente Lizarazu has admitted to battling a rare psychological disorder, according to The Sun.
Lizarazu revealed he suffers from bigorexia, also known as muscle dysmorphia. This condition makes individuals believe their bodies are not muscular or strong enough, driving them to overtrain and follow strict diets aimed at building muscle.
The illness poses significant risks, including depression, suicidal thoughts, and potential steroid abuse if left untreated.
"I have bigorexia. It's fair to say I exercise to excess. Anyone with the condition who stops training from one day to the next risks falling into depression. But this sickness is preferable to other forms of addiction. I just have to know how to manage it," Lizarazu said.
The former left-back was a key member of the iconic France team that won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. Lizarazu played in the starting lineup for both victorious finals, cementing his legacy as one of the game's greats.
