The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has responded to the criticism by pointing to the track record of Morocco’s various national teams.

According to Fouzi Lekjaa, if Morocco were truly receiving preferential treatment or wielding significant influence within the Confederation of African Football, the results achieved in competitions organised by CAF would be far more substantial. To back up his claims, the president of Moroccan football’s governing body pointed out that several of Morocco’s most recent major successes have been achieved in competitions organised under the auspices of FIFA, not CAF.

“If Morocco really had the influence that some attribute to it within CAF, our continental record would be very different. We wouldn’t just have one Africa Cup of Nations won in 1976 and another currently underway.

The World Cup semi-final, the U20 World Cup and the Arab Cup are successes achieved in FIFA competitions, not CAF ones. So where is this supposed influence? What privileges has CAF granted to Morocco?”
