Uruguayan football could undergo unprecedented changes with the possibility of Peñarol and Nacional participating in the Campeonato Gaúcho in Brazil starting in 2026.
The initiative, spearheaded by "aurinegro" president Ignacio Ruglio, aims for the country's two biggest clubs to face stronger opponents in preparation for international competitions, with the goal of better preparation for the Copa Libertadores, reports Infobae.
The tournament, held from January to March, brings together the top teams from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with Grêmio and Internacional as the main participants.
According to Ruglio, the participation of the Uruguayan giants will benefit all parties, increasing television interest and ticket sales revenue.
The president of the Uruguayan Football Association, Ignacio Alonso, acknowledged that the idea is "interesting," and alternatives are being explored to include more teams in an integration format with the Gaúcha Federation.
However, logistics, acceptance in Brazil, and the heated debates this proposal triggers in Uruguay will be decisive factors in determining the feasibility of the project.
