An entire era in the history of the Swiss national team officially came to an end today as legendary winger Xherdan Shaqiri announced his retirement from international football.
“Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team, and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team. I have wonderful memories and I say to you all: THANK YOU!”, Shaqiri wrote on his social media page on X.
The 32-year-old Shaqiri has played for Switzerland since March 2010. He made 125 appearances, scored 32 goals, and provided 34 assists for his national team.
At the recently concluded Euro 2024, Shaqiri scored during the group stage against Scotland, making him the first player in history to score at least one goal in six consecutive major international tournaments.
Since February 2022, Shaqiri has been playing in MLS for Chicago Fire. In Europe, he is known for his stints with Liverpool, Lyon, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Stoke City, and Basel.
