El Monumental Turns 87: River Plate's Stadium Now the Largest in South America

River Plate is celebrating a double milestone. One day after its 124th anniversary, the club marks 87 years since the official opening of the Estadio Monumental, inaugurated on May 26, 1938 with a 3–1 friendly win over Peñarol in front of 70,000 fans. As Infobae reports, the Antonio Vespucio Liberti is now the largest stadium in South America, with a capacity of 85,018.
A major renovation project began in 2020, starting with a full overhaul of the pitch. It evolved into a comprehensive transformation: expanded seating, fully integrated stands, new boxes, upgraded locker rooms, and premium internal areas. Enhancements include a state-of-the-art LED screen, an expanded parking garage, modern dining options, and even a sensory suite designed for individuals on the autism spectrum.
The redesign also brought universal restrooms, a marble-lined central hall, historical club emblems, and a renovated inner ring now 70% complete. The Monumental today stands as a benchmark for inclusive, world-class stadium infrastructure—a symbol of River’s ambition and forward-looking vision.
