Detroit City FC Unveils 'Aggressive' Timeline for New Stadium by 2027 Detroit City FC Unveils 'Aggressive' Timeline for New Stadium by 2027

Detroit City FC has revealed plans to break ground this July on a 15,000-seat soccer stadium, aiming for completion by spring 2027, according to the Detroit Free Press. The stadium will rise on the site of the long-abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital, just west of downtown, in an area bordering Corktown and Mexicantown.

Club co-founders Sean Mann and Todd Kropp detailed the timeline during a May 27 meeting of the Corktown Business Association, calling it ambitious but necessary. Vertical construction is set to begin in early 2026, with final renderings and the stadium’s name to be unveiled this summer.

The club has secured about 17 acres for the privately funded project, which also includes a multilevel parking structure and commercial space to activate the surrounding streetscape. The flooded hospital basement—holding up to 2 million gallons of water—is scheduled to be drained and cleared beginning next week, paving the way for demolition by July.

Detroit City Council recently approved a $5.9 million Brownfield plan to gradually reimburse the club for demolition costs over 21 years. The proposal still awaits final approval from the Michigan Strategic Fund. The new stadium will more than double the capacity of the club’s current home at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck.
