De Paul Draws Parallel Between Atlético's Loss to PSG and Argentina's Start in Qatar

Rodrigo De Paul chose optimism and symbolism after Atlético de Madrid's 4–0 thrashing at the hands of PSG in their Club World Cup opener. The Argentine midfielder drew a striking comparison between this heavy defeat and Argentina’s infamous loss to Saudi Arabia at the start of the 2022 World Cup — a stumble that preceded ultimate glory.
Through a post on Instagram, De Paul shared a split image: Atlético lined up before facing PSG, and Argentina’s squad after their 2–1 loss in Lusail. The caption read, “Sometimes things start badly to end well,” a clear attempt to soothe Colchonero fans and inject hope into a shaken locker room.

The match, played at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, underscored Atlético’s ongoing struggles. After a disappointing European season — third in LaLiga, early Champions League exit, and no trophies — the Spanish side was humbled by the reigning Champions League winners, who showed their dominance with a clinical display.
Despite mounting criticism from media and fans alike, De Paul wasn’t alone in seeking positivity. Fellow Argentine Julián Álvarez also shared a hopeful message: “Tough loss, but this isn’t over.” De Paul replied: “If anyone knows about that, it’s us. Let’s go, Arañita.”
Atlético now faces a must-win scenario against Seattle Sounders on June 19. With Botafogo having already beaten the MLS side, the Spaniards sit bottom of their group and must bounce back quickly to stay in contention.
