Referee Slavko Vinčić had to endure an episode that could have changed his career forever.

Details: On May 30, 2020, the Slovenian referee was in Bosnia and Herzegovina on business and, according to him, accepted an invitation to lunch. However, the meeting took place at a farm near Bijeljina, which was being inspected by the police as part of an investigation into an alleged prostitution and drug trafficking ring.

During the raid, 35 people were detained—26 men and nine women, including Vinčić himself. Authorities reportedly found four packets of cocaine, ten pistols, three bulletproof vests, and a large sum of cash.

Vinčić immediately stated that he had no connection to the individuals targeted in the operation. The referee was questioned as a witness and subsequently released. No charges were ever filed against him.

Six years later, the Slovenian received the most prestigious appointment of his career. FIFA entrusted him with the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which will take place on July 19. Previously, Vinčić also officiated the 2024 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Reminder: Official. Referee appointed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
