CBF Demands Fortaleza Be Awarded Win After Deadly Stampede Cancels Colo Colo Match

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) formally requested that Fortaleza be granted a 3-0 win over Colo Colo following Thursday's tragic incidents in Santiago, Chile, according to La Nación. The Copa Libertadores match, part of Group E, was canceled after a deadly stampede outside the Monumental Stadium resulted in two fatalities and raised serious security concerns.
In its official statement, the CBF cited the Conmebol Disciplinary Code to argue that the home club, Colo Colo, bears responsibility for ensuring safety during the event. The tragedy unfolded as hundreds of fans attempted to force their way into the stadium, reportedly without tickets. Amid the chaos, a metal barrier collapsed, fatally injuring two young spectators—aged 18 and 13—according to Chile’s Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The match was suspended in the 65th minute at 0-0 after Colo Colo supporters stormed the pitch. Hours later, Conmebol declared the game officially canceled due to the absence of security guarantees. Outside the stadium, police clashed with fans, deploying water cannons to disperse crowds, as witnessed by AFP photographers.
Chilean authorities have opened a formal investigation into the events. Prosecutor Francisco Morales stated that one of the deaths may have involved a police vehicle driving over the already fallen barrier. A police officer has been named as a suspect and is currently under questioning.
The CBF argued that the match's outcome should be resolved by awarding Fortaleza a 3-0 victory, both as a disciplinary measure and a precedent for responsibility in international competitions.
