British tennis player vomited on the court during a match against Sinner
Last night in the USA, the men's semifinals of the US Open took place. The first of these was a clash between the world number one, Jannik Sinner of Italy, and 25th-ranked Jack Draper of Great Britain.
Sinner secured a dominant victory, not conceding a single set, with the match ending 7:5, 7:6, 6:2.
However, during one rally in the second set, while Sinner was serving, Draper vomited directly on the court. The British player cleaned up after himself during the pause, and Sinner went on to win his service game.
At the post-match press conference, Draper explained that it was simply a case of nerves.
"Usually, I don’t get sick. It’s strange. Of course, the match was grueling, the conditions were tough. But for a five-setter, it wasn’t that long. Last week, I played for 3 hours and 40 minutes in much hotter weather and felt fine.
I think it’s because this is a Grand Slam tournament. The tension is higher. I wasn’t sure how I’d play, considering the different conditions here. I’m still a young player, just getting used to the atmosphere and pressure of Grand Slams. I feel the fatigue was more due to psychological stress than any physical issues, because physically I felt better in the third set than I did in the first.
Yes, it’s odd that I got sick. It was a long rally—maybe that’s how my body reacted to it being over. I don’t know. It was embarrassing."
