Losing a team leader is always a bitter pill to swallow, and clubs do everything they can to hold on to their stars. That's exactly what Athletic are doing with winger Nico Williams, even referencing a FIFA regulation. But there's a catch.

Details: La Liga president Javier Tebas has alluded to the ‘protected period’ established by FIFA regulations, which stipulates that during the first three years of a player’s contract, it cannot be terminated without just cause—otherwise, both club and player could face sanctions. This point was discussed in meetings with Athletic representatives as a possible lever to influence the player and Barcelona.

However, this rule doesn't apply in Spain. Player transfers in Spain are governed by Royal Decree 1.006, which allows contracts to be terminated by the player upon payment of the release clause, with no further consequences. National law takes precedence over international regulations here, meaning the rule Tebas cited in Williams' case holds no legal weight.

Recall: Earlier, Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated that the club is ready for a thorough financial audit as demanded by Bilbao and La Liga.
