Italian football is in mourning: Rino Marchesi has passed away at the age of 88.
Details: The Italian tactician forever etched his name in history as the first man to coach the great Diego Maradona after his move to Napoli. Marchesi's death is a major loss for calcio, where he was admired not only for his professionalism but also for his rare ability to work with world-class footballing geniuses.
In the 1980s, Marchesi managed from the dugout of Italy's three biggest giants – Napoli, Inter, and Juventus. He became one of the few coaches to have worked with both Diego Maradona (in Naples) and Michel Platini (in Turin) during their careers. It was under his guidance that Platini played his final season as a professional footballer.
Before becoming a successful coach, Rino Marchesi enjoyed a brilliant playing career. He became a Fiorentina legend, winning the Coppa Italia twice, the Mitropa Cup, and the prestigious Cup Winners' Cup in the 1960/61 season.
The Dailysports editorial team extends its condolences to Marchesi's family and loved ones.
