The example of the football Super League and basketball Euroleague has begun to transfer to other sports. So, now the top volleyball clubs intend to create their own league.
According to TVP Sport, this idea has been in the federations for a long time and if the European Volleyball Confederation does not offer good financial conditions to the participants of the CEV Champions League, the top leagues can separate from the CEV and organise their own tournament.
They intend to test this idea on women's volleyball. In the coming weeks an organisation with the working name of the European Association of Clubs is to be presented. Four Italian clubs, three Turkish clubs and two German, Polish and French clubs will take part in it.
But at the same time, the ‘dissenters’ do not intend to immediately enter into confrontation with the CEV, but are ready for constructive dialogue and reform of tournaments, of which there are now three in continental volleyball. In addition to the Champions League, there are also the CEV Cup and the Challenge Cup.
The latter is an analogue of the Conference League in football, and not the top teams take part in it. It is the Challenge Cup that is a stumbling block for the top leagues, as they believe that they lose both money and time on matches against unbeatable opponents.
