An Unbelievable Fine: $50,000 for a Fashion Statement

Segundo Castillo, head coach of Barcelona SC, has been fined $50,000 by Conmebol for breaching marketing regulations during the 2025 Copa Libertadores, Urgente24 reported. The violation had nothing to do with tactics or sportsmanship—it came down to a small but costly accessory on his suit.
Castillo wore a lapel pin during a group-stage match that featured unauthorized promotional elements, which the tournament's Club Manual classifies as “ambush marketing.” Under article 6.3.3, any indirect promotion by non-sponsors is strictly prohibited.
Conmebol enforces these rules to protect its commercial partners. Whether on social media, press events or clothing, unapproved brands are not allowed to benefit from the tournament’s visibility. Castillo’s case has now become a textbook example of the regulation in action.
Barcelona SC wasn’t spared either. The club was fined an additional $10,000 for the poor condition of the pitch during the same match against River Plate.
Castillo, known for his sharp dressing and poise on the sidelines, has earned the nickname “Sir Second Castle” among fans and pundits. But this time, his sartorial flair crossed a line. The penalty raises a broader question: when does personal style come into conflict with the business of modern football?
