Morocco head into the tournament as the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions following a decision by the CAF Appeals Committee, which disqualified Senegal from the final of the previous edition, held in January this year. The Atlas Lions will play their first match since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they once again showed their quality by reaching the quarter-finals. At that stage, Morocco lost to France, ending their impressive 34-match unbeaten run that had lasted since July 2025.
Gabon, meanwhile, will be looking to perform significantly better at this year's Africa Cup of Nations. In the previous edition, the team failed to make it out of the group stage, losing all three of their matches. The Panthers last took to the field in March at the FIFA Series, where they beat Trinidad and Tobago 3:2 on penalties.
