On Wednesday, September 9, Paris Saint-Germain will begin their Champions League campaign against Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes. Luis Enrique's side enters the new European season as the two-time defending champion, while Slovan return to the league phase after successfully navigating three qualifying rounds. On paper, the gap in individual quality is enormous, but PSG's difficult domestic start makes this opener more intriguing than the names alone might suggest.

PSG: European dominance contrasts sharply with a nervous start in France
Paris have started the Ligue 1 season in unusually shaky fashion. After 2-2 draws with Rennes and Lille, the champions suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco despite taking the lead through Marquinhos. There is no question over the position of Luis Enrique. The squad still contains an extraordinary amount of attacking quality, with Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia supported by Vitinha, João Neves and Fabián Ruiz.
And PSG's European numbers remain intimidating despite their domestic problems. They are unbeaten in 11 continental matches, have lost only one of their last ten European home games and scored 45 goals in last season's Champions League, equalling Barcelona's competition record for a single campaign. Luis Enrique's team have also failed to score in only one of their last 25 European fixtures.
Slovan Bratislava: Touré's side have earned their place in Paris
Slovan have already played six Champions League qualifiers to reach this stage. The Slovak champions eliminated Iberia Tbilisi 3-1 on aggregate, Mjällby 4-1 and then survived a much tighter playoff against Celje, winning the decisive away leg 2-1 after extra time. That run has extended their unbeaten sequence in European competition to seven matches.
The major change in Bratislava this summer was on the touchline. Yaya Touré signed a three-year contract as head coach and immediately made his intentions clear: Slovan should play dominant football, try to control matches and not simply sit back. That philosophy has already made them a more ambitious attacking side, although applying it at the Parc des Princes against PSG represents a completely different level of difficulty.
There are also reasons to expect Slovan to contribute to an open game rather than spend the entire evening defending their penalty area. Andraž Šporar and Cristian Martínez scored in the decisive victory over Celje, while Tigran Barseghyan, Rahim Ibrahim and Suleiman Camara give Touré several options for quick transitions. However, the Slovaks' previous experience at this level was brutal: in 2024/25 they lost all eight league-phase matches, and those games produced 34 goals — an average of 4.3 per fixture.

Slovan have been productive throughout qualification and Touré wants his team to play proactively, but that approach can also leave enormous spaces for Dembélé, Doué and Kvaratskhelia.
The visitors' previous Champions League campaign was full of high-scoring matches, and PSG's current combination of elite attacking potential and defensive vulnerability points in the same direction.
