Can Porto’s perfect start survive Haaland? FC Porto vs Manchester City prediction – 08.09.2026
On Tuesday, September 8, FC Porto will host Manchester City at the Estádio do Dragão in the opening round of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase. Both teams enter Europe from a position of domestic strength: Porto have won all five of their league matches, while City have collected maximum points from their opening three Premier League games. This is not a meeting between a favorite and an out-of-form outsider — it is a clash between two sides that have started the season almost perfectly.
Porto: Farioli’s team have barely given opponents a chance
Francesco Farioli could hardly have asked for a better start to the domestic campaign. Porto sit top of the Primeira Liga with five wins from five, 11 goals scored and only one conceded. That first goal allowed arrived in the latest 2-1 victory over Moreirense, when the Dragons recovered from an early setback through goals from Jan Bednarek and William Gomes.
The Portuguese champions have looked particularly convincing without the ball. Farioli has built a compact 4-3-3 around Pablo Rosario, Victor Froholdt and Gabri Veiga, while William Gomes and Pepê provide direct running from wide areas. Against Moreirense, Porto produced 23 shots and nine efforts on target, showing that they can combine territorial control with sustained pressure.
However, the squad is not at full strength. Samu remains sidelined and is not expected back until November, while Zaidu, Vasco Sousa, André Miranda and Oskar Pietuszewski have also been dealing with injuries. There is at least some positive news in attack: Santiago Giménez returned to the squad against Moreirense and came off the bench, giving Farioli another option alongside André Silva.
Manchester City: Maresca’s rebuild is already producing results
Manchester City also arrive in Porto with maximum points in their domestic league. Enzo Maresca’s side have opened the Premier League campaign with three straight victories, beating Bournemouth 2-1, Crystal Palace 4-1 and Coventry 1-0. The latest performance was not their most spectacular, but City still found a way to win and once again showed the control that Maresca wants from his new-look team.
Erling Haaland remains the most obvious threat. His header decided the Coventry match and took him to three league goals for the season. Around him, City now have several new combinations: Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye made their debuts against Coventry, Elliot Anderson has immediately established himself in midfield, and Rayan Cherki has already been heavily involved in the team's attacking play.
There is one fresh concern after Nico O’Reilly pulled out during the warm-up against Coventry with a back problem, although Maresca described the issue as not serious. Jérémy Doku is also currently listed among the unavailable players. Even so, the depth of City’s attacking options remains considerable.

Porto’s start deserves respect. Farioli’s side are organized, aggressive at home and extremely difficult to break down, so Manchester City should not expect an easy evening at the Dragão. Porto’s midfield is capable of competing physically, while Pepê and William Gomes can punish space if City commit too many players forward.
Still, this is a significant jump in the level of opposition for the Portuguese champions. Without Samu, Porto lose one of their most powerful reference points in attack, while City can bring Haaland, Cherki, Semenyo, Ndiaye and Fernández into the same attacking structure. Maresca’s team have already shown that they can dominate possession and also grind out a result when a match becomes uncomfortable.
Porto should stay competitive for long periods, but City have the greater individual quality and considerably more attacking solutions. If the visitors control the central areas and consistently get Haaland into the penalty box, their superiority should eventually tell.
