France, Le Havre, Stade Oceane

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, Le Havre will host Angers at Stade CMA CGM Océane in the fourth round of Ligue 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:45 local time. Didier Digard's team have endured a difficult start and are still searching for their first league victory, while Angers have already shown that Stéphane Gilli's rebuilt side can be dangerous away from home.

Le Havre: a difficult start becomes even more complicated

Le Havre have collected only one point from their opening three Ligue 1 matches. They began with a narrow 1-0 home defeat against Monaco, earned a 1-1 draw away to Lyon and then lost 2-1 to Brest. Digard's side have therefore scored only twice in three league games, and their matches have generally been decided by very small margins.

The Brest match also created serious personnel problems. Junior Mwanga was sent off shortly before half-time and is expected to be unavailable through suspension, while goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi suffered a serious injury in stoppage time. An Achilles tendon rupture was feared immediately after the game, with Digard admitting that a lengthy absence was likely. Gauthier Gallon is therefore the obvious candidate to start in goal.

Le Havre's injury list already includes Félix Mambimbi and Dan-Axel Zagadou, so Digard could be forced to reorganize the defensive unit once again. That makes an aggressive, high-risk approach unlikely. The hosts need points, but their priority should be restoring defensive stability after a frustrating opening month.

Angers: Gilli is trying to add more control without changing the club's identity

Angers entered the new season with a new head coach. Stéphane Gilli replaced Alexandre Dujeux during the summer and signed a contract until 2028. The club's objective remains familiar: secure another season in Ligue 1 while continuing to rely heavily on a compact collective structure and young players.

The SCO opened the championship with a 2-0 defeat against Lille but responded impressively away to Auxerre, winning 3-1. Branco van den Boomen opened the scoring before Harouna Djibirin and Amine El Ouazzani added second-half goals. That performance showed that Angers can punish opponents when space appears, even if dominating possession is not necessarily their preferred route to victory.

Gilli still has some midfield concerns, with Haris Belkebla and Louis Mouton currently listed among the unavailable players. Anthony Lopes, meanwhile, gives Angers considerable experience in goal and should remain one of the key figures in a match where the visitors may spend long periods without the ball.

Probable lineups

  • Le Havre: Gallon; Seko, Sasso, Touba; Jelert, Ebonog, Richardson, Pembélé; Ndiaye; Samatta, Maja.
  • Angers: Lopes; Arcus, Camara, Lefort, Kalulu; Belkhdim, Van den Boomen; Allevinah, Bermont, Sbaï; El Ouazzani.

Le Havre's projection is influenced by Mpasi's injury and Mwanga's red card, while Angers' XI is largely based on the structure used in their 3-1 victory at Auxerre.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Le Havre are winless after their opening three Ligue 1 matches.
  • The hosts have scored only two goals in those three games.
  • Angers won their first away league match of the season 3-1 at Auxerre.
  • Three of the last four competitive meetings between Le Havre and Angers produced fewer than three goals.
  • Last season, Le Havre won 2-1 at home before the return fixture in Angers ended 1-1.

Another tight meeting looks more likely than an open shootout

There are reasons to expect caution from both sides. Le Havre desperately need a positive result, but their attacking output has been modest and Digard now has to compensate for additional problems in defense. Throwing numbers forward from the opening whistle would leave an already reshuffled back line exposed.

Angers are capable of exploiting that weakness, but Gilli's side have little reason to turn the match into a high-tempo contest either. Their victory at Auxerre demonstrated how effectively they can attack spaces when the opponent takes risks, and a compact away setup should suit them.

The recent head-to-head record points in the same direction. These teams are usually separated by fine margins, and three of their previous four meetings stayed below the 2.5-goal line. Even with Le Havre's defensive absences, the hosts' lack of attacking productivity makes another controlled match the more convincing scenario.
