On Saturday, September 12, Lazio welcome AC Milan to the Stadio Olimpico in one of the headline fixtures of Serie A Matchday 4. Kick-off in Rome is scheduled for 18:00 CEST. Both clubs opened the new league campaign with maximum points from their first two matches, making this an early test of two newly installed projects under Gennaro Gattuso and Rúben Amorim.

Lazio: Gattuso has immediately made the Biancocelesti difficult to break down

Lazio could hardly have asked for a better start in Serie A. They defeated Bologna and Genoa by the same 1-0 scoreline, keeping clean sheets in both matches. The common denominator was Davide Frattesi: the summer arrival scored the winner in Bologna and then struck again against Genoa, accounting for both of Lazio's league goals so far.

Gattuso's approach has been pragmatic. Lazio do not need to dominate possession for long stretches and are comfortable protecting central areas before accelerating through the wings. Kenneth Taylor and Nicolò Rovella give the midfield control, while Mattia Zaccagni and Gustav Isaksen remain dangerous when space opens in transition.

The squad was significantly refreshed late in the transfer window. Andrea Pinamonti and Albert Gudmundsson have joined the attacking group, while Josip Šutalo provides another option in defence. At the same time, Alessio Romagnoli has left for Al Sadd and Boulaye Dia also departed. Lazio's Serie A list published on September 2 confirms Gudmundsson, Pinamonti, Frattesi, Šutalo and the rest of Gattuso's updated core.

AC Milan: Amorim has results, but the attack is entering a new era

Milan have also won both of their opening league matches. The Rossoneri began with a 2-1 victory away to Torino before beating Venezia 2-0 at San Siro. Amorim's side have therefore scored four goals and conceded only once, while already displaying the Portuguese coach's familiar principles: a back three, aggressive wing-backs, high pressing and quick vertical attacks.

Gonçalo Ramos opened his competitive Milan account against Venezia, while Adrien Rabiot started the season particularly well and Alphadjo Cissè has already demonstrated that he can contribute at senior level. Christian Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze and Alexis Saelemaekers give Amorim different options behind the centre-forward.

However, this is now a very different Milan attack. Rafael Leão completed a permanent transfer to Galatasaray on August 30, while Santiago Gimenez and Christopher Nkunku also left on loan. Omari Hutchinson arrived from Nottingham Forest and has been added to Amorim's attacking options. Matteo Gabbia is the clearest current fitness concern: Amorim confirmed on September 5 that the defender had suffered a problem and that the club did not yet know how long he would be unavailable.

Match facts and head-to-head trends

  • Lazio won their first two Serie A matches 1-0 and have yet to concede.
  • Frattesi scored Lazio's winner in both opening league games.
  • Milan started with two victories, scoring four goals and conceding once.
  • The last three meetings between Lazio and Milan in all competitions all finished 1-0.
  • Lazio won the most recent meeting at the Olimpico, with Gustav Isaksen scoring the only goal in March 2026.

Expect another tactical battle in Rome: Lazio vs AC Milan prediction

There is enough attacking quality on both sides to punish mistakes, but the early evidence points toward a controlled match rather than an open shootout. Gattuso's Lazio have conceded nothing in 180 league minutes and have shown that they are perfectly comfortable protecting narrow advantages. Milan are more proactive with the ball, yet Amorim also places huge importance on defensive spacing and immediate pressure after possession is lost.

The recent head-to-head record strengthens the argument. Three consecutive competitive meetings have ended 1-0, and both teams enter this fixture with defensive structures already functioning better than their attacking automatisms. Milan are also adapting to life without Leão and several other departed forwards, while Lazio's new attacking pieces are still being integrated.

A single goal could completely reshape the match, and neither coach is likely to welcome an end-to-end contest against an opponent with dangerous transition players. The under therefore looks like the most logical option.
