When will this end? Everton again face deduction of points for violating financial fair play rules
In the previous season, Everton faced significant challenges in the Premier League, finding themselves close to the relegation zone due to points deductions for violating financial fair play rules. Despite these difficulties, the Toffees managed to retain their place in England's top division.
In November 2023, the Liverpool-based club was initially docked ten points for breaches during the 2021/22 season, but after an appeal, the penalty was reduced to six points. Later, in April this year, an additional two points were returned after reviewing the infractions related to the 2022/23 season.
However, it appears that this trend of sanctions may continue for Everton in the new campaign. According to The SunSport, an independent commission is currently considering imposing another penalty on the club, this time related to interest payments associated with their stadium. Initially, the sum in question was £17 million, but the commission immediately dismissed that figure and is now reviewing the matter concerning £6.5 million.
As of now, the independent commission has not informed either Everton or the Premier League when they will reach a decision, despite both parties urging for a prompt resolution.
The Premier League contends that the disputed £6.5 million should be added to the club's expenses, as it was used for ongoing operational costs. However, Everton argues that this amount should be excluded since stadium-related expenses are typically not considered in financial fair play calculations.
If the commission sides with the Premier League, Everton could face another points deduction either before or early in the new season, further complicating their campaign.
