Can Canada's recent dominance survive the new US cycle? USA vs Canada prediction — 07.10.2026
The North American rivalry returns at Allianz Field in St. Paul, where the United States and Canada meet in an international friendly. The game is officially scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time on October 6, which is already October 7 in European time zones. Both teams have begun a new cycle after the 2026 World Cup, but while Mauricio Pochettino is actively refreshing the US player pool, Jesse Marsch continues to work with a more familiar Canadian core.

USA: youth is already producing goals
The first matches of the new cycle have shown exactly why Pochettino decided to open the door to a younger generation. The squad selected for this international window has an average age of just under 23, with a large number of newcomers alongside experienced players such as Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest, Gio Reyna, Malik Tillman and Chris Richards. Pochettino, whose contract now runs through 2030, is clearly using these friendlies to broaden his options rather than simply relying on the core that played at the World Cup.
The results have been encouraging. The United States defeated Peru 4-1 before beating Chile 4-2, meaning they scored eight goals across their first two matches of this cycle. Julian Hall found the net in both games, Sebastian Berhalter recorded a goal and an assist against Chile, while Mathis Albert became the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history. Particularly impressive is the variety of attacking threats: against Chile, four different players scored for the second consecutive match.
There are still obvious risks, however. Such a young and heavily rotated team is naturally less stable without the ball, and conceding three times across those two victories illustrates that Pochettino's side can leave space when committing numbers forward.
Ricardo Pepi will not be available after withdrawing from the squad because of injury, with Damion Downs added in his place. That should create further opportunities for Hall and the other young forwards.
Canada: no Davies, but plenty of experience in attack
Canada arrive with considerably more continuity. Jesse Marsch remains in charge, and the 26-man squad contains established attacking options such as Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg and Liam Millar, while Stephen Eustáquio remains an important figure in midfield.
There is one major absentee: captain Alphonso Davies is unavailable for this international window due to his marriage celebration and honeymoon. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau is also unavailable because of a personal matter. Even so, Marsch still has enough experience and pace to make Canada dangerous in transition, particularly against an American side that is currently experimenting with personnel.
Canada's latest completed friendly brought a 1-0 victory over Chile, with Jonathan David scoring in the 12th minute. The result deserves some context, as Chile were reduced to ten men in the 35th minute and then to nine shortly after half-time, yet Canada were unable to extend their advantage. Still, another clean sheet underlined their ability to manage a game from a position of control.
Canada should also take confidence from the recent history of this rivalry. They have won both of their last two meetings with the United States by the same 2-1 scoreline, including their victory on American soil in September 2024.
Possible lineups
- USA: Freese — Freeman, Richards, Trusty, Antonee Robinson — Adams, Berhalter, Tillman — Dest, Hall, Reyna.
- Canada: St. Clair — Laryea, Cornelius, De Fougerolles, Sigur — Eustáquio, Saliba — Buchanan, Jonathan David, Shaffelburg — Larin.
Key trends
- The USA have scored four goals in each of their first two completed friendlies of the new cycle.
- Four different American players scored against Chile, just as four different players were involved in the scoring against Peru.
- Canada have won the last two head-to-head meetings 2-1.
- Three of the last five meetings between these teams have produced over 2.5 goals.
- Each of the last five head-to-head meetings has produced at least two goals.
The USA are creating too many chances for this rivalry to stay quiet
There is little reason to expect either team to treat this like a defensive tournament match. Pochettino is testing young players and encouraging an energetic, proactive style, and so far the result has been an American attack producing goals in bunches but also allowing opponents opportunities at the other end.
Canada are well equipped to exploit that openness. Even without Davies, Marsch can call on Jonathan David, Buchanan, Larin and Shaffelburg, while the Canadians have already shown in the last two meetings that they are comfortable attacking the spaces the United States leave behind.
The USA should create enough chances of their own, especially with Hall, Reyna, Tillman, Dest and Berhalter offering several different routes to goal. At the same time, their current defensive vulnerability makes it difficult to expect another controlled clean-sheet performance. A 2-1 or 2-2 type of contest looks entirely realistic, making the goals market the most attractive direction here.
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals.
