Uruguayan Intermedio Kicks Off with Peñarol and Nacional Eyeing Different Paths

The 2025 Torneo Intermedio of Uruguay’s top football division kicks off this Friday, just days after the end of the Apertura. As reported by EFE, the tournament offers teams a shot at mid-season silverware and a place in the Supercopa final.
The competition is split into two groups of eight teams each. The winners of each group will face off in a single-match final to decide the Intermedio champion. Group A includes Peñarol, Liverpool, Defensor Sporting, Cerro Largo, Cerro, Plaza Colonia, River Plate and Wanderers. Group B features Nacional, Montevideo City Torque, Danubio, Miramar Misiones, Progreso, Boston River, Juventud de Las Piedras and Racing.
Opening day fixtures include Nacional vs. Progreso and Racing vs. Boston River. Nacional, coached by Pablo Peirano, will aim to keep pace in the Anual Table, currently trailing leaders Liverpool by a single point. The Anual Table grants an edge in the season-ending finals.
Saturday’s spotlight shifts to Peñarol, who host Plaza Colonia while balancing their Copa Libertadores ambitions. Sunday's matches wrap up the first round with key duels like Liverpool vs. Cerro and Wanderers vs. River Plate.
With all matches broadcast live on Disney+, the Intermedio will run through June. Traditional powerhouses like Nacional and Peñarol are in the mix, but so are emerging sides like Montevideo City Torque and Miramar Misiones looking to make headlines in one of South America’s most storied leagues.
