Unión Española will host Colombia’s Once Caldas this Wednesday at Sausalito Stadium for Matchday 2 of Group F in the Copa Sudamericana, both sides needing a win after disappointing opening results, according to ESPN. The Chilean club drew 1-1 away against GV San José in Bolivia, while the Colombian side lost 1-0 at home to Fluminense.
Unión Española enters the match with just one home win this year —a 3-0 victory over Palestino in the Chilean Cup— and struggles domestically, sitting third from bottom with only three points after five rounds. Head coach José Luis Sierra admitted the team had a poor start and emphasized the need to reverse their form quickly.
Once Caldas, on the other hand, arrives in better spirits. The Manizales-based team defeated América de Cali 3-0 over the weekend, with veteran striker Dayro Moreno scoring twice. Now Colombia’s all-time top scorer, Moreno leads a squad eager to bounce back after their opening home loss in this tournament. Coach Hernán Darío Herrera said the team is “highly motivated” for the trip to Chile and determined to claim their first Sudamericana points.
This will mark the first ever international meeting between the two clubs.
